Why Creating is the Best Way to Reclaim Your Calm

The Healing Hands:

We often look at finished pieces of art hanging on a wall or glowing on a screen and think, “That’s lovely."

But I want to share a little secret with you, both as someone who creates abstract Persian calligraphy and as someone studying psychology and counselling: Art therapy isn’t about the finished product. It’s entirely about the process.

When the world around us becomes overwhelming, when our minds are heavy with worries, or when personal anxiety leaves us feeling helpless, we don’t always need a perfect solution. Sometimes, we just need a release valve.


Here is why picking up a tool, a brush, or a pen is one of the most powerful psychological gifts you can give yourself.


1. Carving Out Our Worries: The Power of Physical Creation

From a psychological perspective, this is a brilliant exercise in somatic grounding. When you are carving a line:

  • You have to watch your fingers carefully.

  • You must control the exact amount of pressure you apply.

  • Your world shrinks down to the tip of that metal blade.

In those moments, your brain gets a desperately needed break from the loop of anxious thoughts. It forces you out of your head and into your hands. You are physically carving away the excess noise, leaving behind a clear, intentional shape.


2. Transforming Grief Into Power

When we are struggling, our feelings can feel incredibly dark and heavy, like the messy grey and black tones on that canvas. But look at what happens when you put your worries on the paper/canvas, you can create a piece of art. Taking painful, chaotic internal energy and redirecting it into something meaningful and alive. It’s a reminder that you don't have to wait for your circumstances to be perfectly clear before you can invite joy, colour, and passion back into your life.

3. Embracing the Beautiful Mess

Finally, there are no strict boundaries here. No neat blocks or carefully contained lines. It is an expression of pure freedom.

So often in our daily lives, we feel immense pressure to "have it all together." We repress our fears, smile through our stress, and bottle up our grief. But your nervous system can only hold so much tension before it screams for a break. Letting ink flow across a page without worrying if it’s right or wrong is an act of self-compassion. It says: It's okay to be messy right now.

How to Begin Your Own Creative Healing Journey

You don’t need to buy expensive canvases or master the art to practice creative self-healing. You can start exactly where you are right now:

  • Doodle with purpose: Take a simple ballpoint pen and fill a small scrap of paper with repetitive lines, waves, or circles. Notice how the rhythm calms your breathing.

  • Destruct to reconstruct: Tear up old magazines or newspapers into tiny pieces and glue them down into a brand new collage. It’s an incredibly satisfying way to safely process frustration.

  • Focus on the sensation: Don't think about what you are making. Focus on the coldness of the paint, the scratch of the pencil, or the smooth texture of the paper.

Your Turn to Heal

Creativity isn't a luxury; it’s a tool for survival. When we create, we take the chaotic pieces of our inner world and organise them externally. We remind ourselves that even when we feel utterly powerless against the storms of life, we still possess the power to shape something beautiful right in front of us.
