The ‘Engagement Holiday’
Why a Two-Day Trip to Phuket Spoilt Me for Life
Ah, 2011. A simpler time. A time when my partner Richard and I lived in Malaysia and treated international travel the way most people treat a casual trip to the local supermarket.
Back then, hopping across Southeast Asia was ridiculously cheap, effortlessly easy, and, if I’m being completely honest, something we utterly took for granted. It wasn’t until we moved to the UK that reality hit us like a cold, wet British Tuesday. Suddenly, travelling abroad required a second mortgage, three months of bureaucratic negotiations for time off work, and a flight so long it could cause deep-vein thrombosis just thinking about it.

But looking back, there is one specific weekend getaway that stands head and shoulders above the rest. The trip I now affectionately refer to as our ‘Engagement Holiday.’
The Setup (and the Shock)
It started standard enough. Richard organised a cheeky weekend away to Phuket, Thailand. We checked into our hotel, dropped our bags, and did what any self-respecting tourist does: headed straight to the beach.
There we were, walking barefoot in the sand, watching a sunset so magnificent it looked like a screensaver. It was peak romance. And then, out of absolutely nowhere, Richard dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring.
Now, I’m not saying I was oblivious, but it was totally unexpected. Through the shock, I managed a resounding "Yes!"—and to this day, it remains the absolute best decision I’ve ever made.
Authentic Curry and... Pole Dancing?
Once the emotional high settled and we realised we were officially engaged, we did what any newly betrothed couple would do: we went out to celebrate by exploring Phuket's legendary nightlife.
And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The energy was electric, the music was brilliant, and the drinks were flowing. We stuffed ourselves with authentic, delicious Thai food.
It is funny how a single weekend can occupy such a massive space in your heart. Every single time I think about that trip, it brings a massive smile to my face. It was short, it was sweet, and it was unforgettable.

So, here’s to impromptu weekend flights, Thai sunsets, football-loving fiancé(e)s, and the holiday of a lifetime.
